Cruelty-Free Brands in South Africa 2020-2021

Written by:

Transitioning to cruelty-free beauty can seem like a daunting move, especially if you have a set skincare routine and makeup collection. However, it is one of the best decisions you can make. As a conscious consumer of ethical, clean and animal friendly products you are basically changing the world one purchase at a time.

Updated List is coming soon

Two years ago, I compiled my first list of cruelty-free brands in South Africa. Since then the list has grown and more cruelty-free beauty brands have entered the market. Unfortunately, some brands had to be removed because of their change in animal testing regulations or have started selling in mainland China where animal testing is permitted.

Pinterest graphic for Cruelty-free brands in South Africa.

As mentioned above, I have added a few brands who confirmed that they do not test on animals. I have also researched brands on my favourite international cruelty-free blogs Cruelty-Free Kitty and Ethical Elephant.

The brands listed below are all available in stores or online. If a brand does not appear on the list it means that it is NOT cruelty-free.

Thanks for this updated list! I also created a list for cruelty free brands in Mauritius: https://greenbeautymauritius.wordpress.com/2020/08/23/cruelty-free-brands-mauritius/ since it is not too far away from South Africa, maybe some of these brands will also be available here too.

Good day I see that Avroy Shlain, Avon and Annique claim to be not tested on animals. Why aren’t they on the list ?

        Good evening
How come Debra Moller‘s enquiry was not answered?
Annique claims that their products are not tested on animals.
        They are not listed though.
        Looking forward to your reply.

Bionike is not cruelty free . They sell in China. They even have a Chinese Facebook page, l think. I also used to assume they were cruelty free.

Hi. I would really like this to be confirmed. I agree, if they sell in China, we can assume they are not cruelty free. But, do they sell in stores or just online? ( in China).

Hey, I love this list and I was wondering if you could potentially look into the brand Afri Pure and find out if they are cruelty free. I have been searching and cannot find any information if they are or aren’t. I would really appreciate your help.
    thank you !!

Hi! We are currently working on a new and updated list that will show if a brand is vegan too :)
As for smashbox, it depends where you are based as there may be retailers who sell the brand online.
