Dear reader,

I know I don’t always start my blog posts with a greeting but I thought I would try something new.

I have spent weeks writing, rewriting and scrapping drafts of review posts and reflections to share after my consistent blog break. Once again, I deleted a somewhat insincere post to write this one – a more honest and personal post.

I know I haven’t posted a while. The truth is I have been busy. Time seemed to mesh between the last published post in February to now. I have had so much going on that I simply could not find the time or energy to write. Now that I have more time to spare, I thought I would reignite my passion for writing (but first I got coffee).

Why Haven’t I Blogged?

As I mentioned before, I have been busy. I am a full-time postgraduate student and I work part-time. In the list of my priorities, blogging has unfortunately dropped to my bottom 5. If you have ever studied, worked, and tried to be a functioning adult in this world you would understand the level of stress that comes with these responsibilities. With assignments that require immense amounts of research to be done, long working hours and other responsibilities like just making sure I don’t mess up, my creativity was stifled. I see blogging as a creative outlet- not just as writing and online media.

And when I create I prefer to let it flow instead of forcing it.

Ironically enough, I have been a little more creative on Instagram. For the first time since 2014 I have been creating fun and more genuine content. I’ve taken a strong liking to Reels (TikTokers don’t hate me!). I have also managed to connect with more members of my online community. A big lesson I’ve learnt from this is: the less I try to over plan content the more authentic and fun it is. That is a concept I hope to adapt to my blogging strategy.

Physical and Mental Well-Being

With all of the responsibilities I have it sometimes seems nearly impossible to balance my physical and mental well-being. Although I can confirm that I am doing better than last year. After the mess that was 2020, I dealt with higher levels of stress and anxiety that I haven’t dealt with before. Speak to anyone close to me – I am the calmest person ever. But controlling my anxious thoughts about the future, the current state of the world and trying to find my feet was one of the hardest challenges I overcame. Let’s not forget the random moments of homesickness… South Africa has a spirit that is unmatched.

Another thing that lead to my anxiety is my change in diet. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed a few food posts containing meat. This was something I grappled with sharing as I was afraid of the backlash I would face – especially since I am a cruelty-free beauty advocate and have shared posts on veganism. But now I have overcome my fear and I am ready to answer any questions you might have for me.

Am I vegan? No. Do I eat meat? Yes.

In January I found out I had an iron deficiency after nearly fainting in Perth City. I had to get an iron infusion (which was not fun) and the doctor suggested that I try to eat red meat at least twice a week to help. I have been doing that ever since and honestly, I feel healthier. But I still try to eat mostly vegan food when I can.

What is the plan?

Now that I have more free time I do intend on creating more content. There are plenty more cruelty-free products that I want to write honest reviews on and hopefully more that I can try out.

Despite my change in diet I still want to share vegan recipes and tips that I personally like and that I think would help those of you who are trying to go vegan (and will do a better job than me) or who just want to decrease their meat intake. This also ties up to lifestyle and sustainable living. As I mentioned many times before you don’t have to be a perfect environmentalist to help the planet. I am certainly nowhere near being a perfect environmentalist.
